Sound check

Free online mic test

Test your microphone in seconds — live level meter, device picker and a 5-second recording you can play back. Everything runs locally in your browser: no download, and your voice never leaves your device. Built for The Choicer Voicer players checking their mic before a dub, but it works for any microphone.

Click "Start mic" and allow microphone access.

What this mic test checks

  • Hardware & connection — the bar moves → your mic is plugged in and capturing.
  • OS permission & default device — the browser asks for the same mic access the game needs. Use the device picker to confirm exactly which microphone is live; if your browser hears the wrong mic, the game probably does too.
  • Recording quality — record 5 seconds and listen back: if you hear yourself clearly without distortion, your whole chain is healthy.

How to read the result

The bar and the dB number show your live input level. Speak a line at the volume you'd use in the game:

  • Bar barely moves (below ~-40 dB) — too quiet. Get closer to the mic or raise the input volume in your OS sound settings.
  • Bar moves past the middle (−40 to −6 dB) — good level for recording voice pack lines.
  • Bar slams the right edge (near 0 dB) — clipping. Lower the input gain or back off, or the game hears distorted audio.

Mic works here but not in The Choicer Voicer?

Passing this test but staying silent in-game points at the known Godot recording bug or a wrong default input device — not your hardware. Follow the step-by-step microphone fix guide, which covers the official free No Gameplay Demo, OS permissions, default device and sample rate. Once your mic works, grab some lines to record from the pack directory or package your own with the Voice Pack Maker.

Mic test FAQ

Do I need to download or install anything to test my mic?

No. This mic test runs entirely in your browser using the built-in Web Audio API. Click "Start mic", allow microphone access when the browser asks, and speak — the level bar and dB readout respond instantly. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and mobile.

Is my voice recorded or uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens locally on your device. The live meter reads the mic signal in memory, and the 5-second recording is stored as a temporary file inside your browser tab only — it is never sent to any server. Closing or reloading the tab deletes it.

Why does my mic work here but not in The Choicer Voicer?

If the bar moves when you speak, your hardware, OS permission and default input device are fine — which points at the game itself. The Choicer Voicer has a known Godot engine recording bug, and it always listens to the system default input device. Our microphone fix guide walks through the official free No Gameplay Demo, OS permissions, default device and sample rate fixes step by step.

What mic level is good for recording voice pack lines?

Speak at your normal performance volume and watch the dB readout. A healthy signal sits roughly between -40 and -6 dB — loud enough that the bar moves well past the left edge, quiet enough that it never pins at 100%. If it constantly reads near 0 dB or slams the right edge, lower your input gain or back off the mic to avoid clipping.

Which microphone should I pick in the device list?

Pick the exact mic you will use in the game — usually your headset or USB microphone, not the webcam or laptop built-in. The Choicer Voicer records from the system default input device, so if this test hears a different mic than the game does, set that same mic as default in your OS sound settings.

Can I test my microphone on my phone?

Yes — modern mobile browsers support the same mic APIs, so the test works on Android and iOS. The Choicer Voicer itself is a desktop game (Windows and Linux), but this page is handy for checking a headset or USB mic on any device.
